A goal-first strategy

The fastest useful call starts before you dial.

Have a current copy of the bureau’s report, the report or confirmation number, the exact account and field involved, the correction requested, and supporting documents ready. Ask about one specific issue at a time and write down the representative’s name, date, time, confirmation number, and next step.

Contact routes and hours can change. The information below was checked against bureau sources on August 14, 2026. Confirm the current phone number and mailing address on the bureau’s official website or your own report before sending personal documents.

What we examine

Official consumer credit-report contacts

These are consumer-report contacts—not lender, business-credit, advertising, or membership-sales numbers.

01

Experian

Consumer assistance: 888-397-3742. For a telephone dispute, Experian advises using the dispute number printed on your Experian report. Mail: P.O. Box 4500, Allen, TX 75013.

02

Equifax

888-378-4329. Published hours: Monday–Friday 9 a.m.–9 p.m. ET; Saturday–Sunday 9 a.m.–6 p.m. ET. Mail: P.O. Box 740256, Atlanta, GA 30374-0256.

03

TransUnion

800-916-8800. Consumer Relations: Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–10 p.m. ET; Saturday–Sunday 8 a.m.–5 p.m. ET. Mail: P.O. Box 2000, Chester, PA 19016-2000.

04

AnnualCreditReport.com

Use the federally authorized website or call 877-322-8228 to request reports. This is report access—not a dispute department.

01
Before the call

Use the report itself as your map

Do not begin with “remove everything negative.” Identify the bureau, creditor or collector, partial account number, exact data field, what it currently says, why you believe that fact is wrong, and what record supports the correction.

When the automated system asks why you are calling, use a truthful description such as “consumer credit report assistance” or “dispute inaccurate report information.” Menu choices change, so Credit Repair Hero does not publish a shortcut code that may become inaccurate.

  • Current report and report number
  • One specific issue
  • Supporting document
  • Pen for representative and confirmation details
  • No passwords or verification codes shared with an unexpected caller
02
Inquiries

A valid inquiry is not removed just because it affected the file

If an inquiry is unfamiliar, first contact the company listed and ask what application or permissible purpose created it. The name on the report may be a parent company, bank, or finance source rather than the store or dealer you remember.

If the company confirms the inquiry was unauthorized, ask what written confirmation it can send to the bureau. If identity theft is involved, follow IdentityTheft.gov and the bureau’s fraud process. Do not claim fraud when an application was actually authorized.

03
Mailing safely

Send copies, preserve originals, and prove delivery

Use the current address published for the exact request. Include a clear letter, copies of relevant evidence, and only the identity documents the bureau’s official instructions require. Redact unrelated sensitive information where permitted.

USPS Certified Mail is a United States Postal Service product. Keep the mailing receipt and tracking, and consider Return Receipt when appropriate. A UPS Store may accept some USPS mail, but the service and tracking are issued through USPS; a Post Office is the clearest route.

The Credit Repair Hero method

A better bureau-contact routine

  1. 01

    Verify the contact

Start from the bureau’s official website or the number printed on your current credit report.

  2. 02

    State one factual concern

Name the account, exact data, reason it appears inaccurate, and requested correction.

  3. 03

    Record the interaction

Save the date, time, representative, confirmation number, promised action, and deadline.

  4. 04

    Follow up in writing

When documentation matters, send a clear letter and copies through the bureau’s current official mail process.

Questions answered

Calling and mailing the bureaus

Every credit profile is different. These are general answers; your evaluation connects them to your reports and goal.

Ask a Credit Hero
What is the fastest way to reach a live person?

Call the official consumer-report number during published service hours, have your current report ready, and truthfully identify the specific credit-report or dispute issue. Phone menus change, so there is no permanent shortcut sequence we can responsibly promise.

Can I email a dispute?

The major bureaus generally direct consumers to their secure online portal, phone, or postal mail process. Do not email identity documents to an address unless the bureau’s current official instructions specifically provide it for your request.

Should I mail original documents?

Usually send copies, not originals, unless official instructions specifically require otherwise. Keep a complete copy of the entire packet.

Can the bureau remove every inquiry?

No. A valid inquiry may remain. Question an inquiry only when you genuinely do not recognize or authorize it, and investigate the company name and permissible purpose first.
